DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Inside a warehouse in Detroit Lakes late Saturday morning, the air was crisp. A family from Thief River Falls and a family friend moved in a steady rhythm, stacking 400 boxes onto pallets, wrapping them and loading them onto a semitrailer they had driven down that morning. Their gloved and ungloved hands worked quickly, exhaling breath visible in the chill.
Gary and Lisa Geske, their daughter Kayla and Kayla’s friend Jeneva Kotrba made the trip to help with the pickup, one of many steps in a long volunteer chain that will eventually carry the boxes to people in need across the country and around the world.
“This is something I feel I’ve been called to do,” Gary said, pausing between loads. The family pays their own fuel and trailer expenses.
