SOMERSET, Ky. (WKYT) - A Somerset church has received worldwide attention after a pastor’s response to what he thought was a plea for help went viral on social media.
The incident began when a woman called Heritage Hope Church of God asking for $17 to buy baby formula, claiming her baby was hungry. Pastor Johnny Dunbar, who has led the church for decades, agreed to help.
“I’ve said no a thousand times. I’ve been scammed. I’ve been told every story in the world,” Dunbar said.
But he said yes this time.
The woman was actually conducting a TikTok challenge, posing as a mother in need to test how churches would respond. She contacted numerous churches nationwide, including megachurches, and many refused to help.
