WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - In Lowville, we catch up with a Vietnam War veteran who, decades after returning home, was later activated for the Iraq War.
Enjoying his Veteran’s Day spaghetti lunch at the Lowville VFW, 82-year-old Harold “Jimmy” Mathys says he has a lot to be grateful for.
“I think going into the service made a better man out of me,” he said.
The Lewis County native is a Vietnam War veteran and was later in the Army Reserves, activated for the Iraq War.
Tales he tells often at the Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Project’s recently opened location in Lowville. Oftentimes, drinking coffee with fellow veterans, watching M*A*S*H* reruns.
“He was our first veteran that came in the door. He’s been with us all five months now,” said Eric Baker, specialist, Joseph P. Dwye
