TRENTON, Fla. (WCJB) — City commissioners voted to disband their entire public safety department, cutting all police officers to free up money for repaving streets across the city.
The decision means Trenton will no longer have its own police force. The city says it’s turning to the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office to handle calls, while fire services will remain under city control.
The move comes as city leaders look for ways to pay for a multi-million dollar repaving project — one they say has been put off for years. To fund it, commissioners approved cutting four full-time and four part-time officers, leaving only the police chief and an administrative assistant.
The city manager says Sheriff Bobby Schultz’s office will now cover calls within Trenton city limits.
