CECIL TOWNSHIP, Pa. —
Community members gathered at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies on Tuesday to honor veterans after the government shutdown and funding issues canceled the official Veterans Day ceremony.
When taps played and dozens gathered, many carrying the American flag, it was a ceremony organized by the people. These men and women, many strangers, did not want Veterans Day to pass without recognizing those who wore the uniform. Advertisement
Although more intimate than previous years, the community decided to honor veterans themselves due to the absence of the official ceremony and the Avenue of the Flags .
"No matter what, we can still do what we've been doing for years," said Alicia Sakelos, of Cecil Township. "Continue thanking the veterans."
