Waterloo city council will consider hiking council pay by almost one-third, based on citizen advice.
A committee of citizens, tasked with reviewing council pay for the first time since 2017, has recommended hiking the annual salary of a part-time city councillor to $58,463 from $44,257, an increase of 32 per cent.
The raise is warranted because, since 2017, Waterloo has fallen too far behind peer towns and cities that include Kitchener and Cambridge, the committee says.
The proposed pay increase aims to restore council salaries to the midpoint of part-time salaries across six comparable towns and cities. It balances the need to provide elected officials with fair and competitive compensation, says a report by city staff.
