It took mere seconds for scammers to steal $19,000 from Donna Safer’s Treasury Direct account. It happened when her husband tried to go on the government website.
“He went onto Google, and he put in Treasury Direct, and he clicked on [the] first thing that came up,” Donna Safer, from Avon, said.

Safer said he typed in their username and password, unaware that it was a fake Treasury Direct website.
“Almost immediately he saw that there was a fictitious bank listed on the account. And then within seconds, I got two emails telling me that redemptions were being processed for these accounts,” Safer said.
She immediately realized they’d been scammed. But Treasury Direct was already closed for the day.
