HASTINGS — Students at Alcott Elementary School honored veterans during their lunch period Tuesday by sharing free meals with family members who served in the armed forces.
Any student with a family member in the military, retired or active, received free meals and sat with their loved ones during the event.
“Getting the chance to represent your country as a veteran I think is really special,” said Allison Soucie, a P.E. teacher at Alcott Elementary. “We’re here because of them. It started long ago and people are still continuing in those footsteps.”
The school provided veterans with goodie bags during the lunch event. After eating, veterans joined students for playtime.
Soucie said she wants students to learn about history and community service through the event.
