GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Senate passed a long-awaited funding package late Monday night that could finally bring an end to the 41-day federal government shutdown , the longest in U.S. history.
The bill funds the government through January 2026, restores operations for federal agencies, and guarantees back pay for furloughed federal employees once the shutdown ends. It now heads to the House, where a vote could come as early as Wednesday. If it passes, President Donald Trump must still sign it before the government can fully reopen.
Eight Senate Democrats broke with their party to vote for the deal, saying the shutdown had dragged on too long and hurt millions of families. The measure reverses Trump’s recent furloughs of federal workers and includes three yearlong appropriations bills
