MERIDIAN TWP., Mich. (WILX) - Two battery fires in less than two weeks left a Meridian Township family displaced from their home and searching for answers about the safety of common household devices.
Lithium-ion batteries are found in phones, laptops and countless other devices we all use on a daily basis.
Fire officials say more of these batteries are bursting into flames without warning in what experts call “thermal runaway.”
First fire: Headphones in the garage
Thick black smoke poured from Rose Tantraphol and Scott Swanson’s Meridian Township garage this past June.
“I heard yelling. I heard my wife yelling. So I ran downstairs, had no idea what was going on,” Scott Swanson said.
