Alex de Minaur has missed his chance to win $US396,500 ($A607,000) and secure a semi-final berth after collapsing to a brutal defeat at the ATP Finals in Turin.

The 26-year-old was two points away from victory over Lorenzo Musetti only to be broken twice in three games, as Italy’s home hero claimed a popular 7-5 3-6 7-5 win.

De Minaur now requires an upset win over Taylor Fritz — and a likely Carlos Alcaraz triumph over Musetti — to get out of the group stage.

But the Aussie is up against it after gaining a reputation as a nearly man since joining the world’s top 10.

He is yet to win any of his five matches at the ATP Finals over the past two years and continues to struggle against his nearest rivals.
