SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane City Council is moving forward on a new program that would award the city over $8 million in a contracted grant from the state Department of Commerce.

The encampment resolution program would spread out the $8 million across several different housing projects in the city.

One of these projects, which would receive about $575,000 of the funds, is a plan for a tiny home village to be constructed in the West Hills area and house around 30 units.

Advocates for the program say it will help connect those in need with affordable housing and services.

One local business owner speaking at the city council meeting in opposition said all the program would do is bring "crime and chaos" into established neighborhoods.
