SPRINGFIELD, Neb. (WOWT) — A World War II veteran and Iwo Jima survivor visited Springfield Platteview Community Schools for the district’s annual Veterans Day program Tuesday.
Bob Boyd is believed to be one of four living survivors who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He served as the ceremony’s special guest. Boyd enlisted in the Marines days before his 18th birthday.
“My dad was Army and I had three cousins that were in the Navy. No way in hell I wanted to serve under them,” Boyd laughed.
The Veterans Day ceremony filled the gym with service members past and present.
Principal Darin Johnson of Platteview Central Junior High School introduced Boyd as “a Marine, a World War II Veteran, and an Iwo Jima survivor.”
