Three Liberal politicians have been delayed getting to Canberra for climate talks after a Qantas plane was forced to make an urgent landing at Adelaide Airport when crews noticed smoke in the cabin.

A Qantas spokesperson said the QF1972 flight heading to Canberra, which was an E190 aircraft, turned around shortly after it departed about 6:10am on Wednesday.

A Liberal Party spokesperson told ABC News Breakfast South Australian MP Tony Pasin and senators Leah Blyth and Andrew McLachlan were on the plane.

Ms Blyth said she noticed smoke in the cabin shortly after take-off.

"Upon take-off there was a smell of smoke in the cabin and there was light, white smoke that filled the cabin," she said.

"It was an unexpected start to the morning with one of the shortest flights I've ever had."
