AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - United Way of the CSRA has seen phone lines overwhelmed with calls for assistance over the last few weeks as the government shutdown continues to impact local families.
The YMCA is also seeing an increase in need. The organization typically serves about 600 people across their 10 locations but expects to triple that number this month.
United Way CSRA President and CEO Brittany Burnett said calls have increased dramatically over the last two weeks.
“Our phone lines are just lighting up,” said Burnett. “From the minute that we turn them on until the minute we turn them off, they are calling with varying needs.”
