JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KY3) - This Veterans Day, Missouri is honoring veterans of the modern era with the expansion of a monument at the state capitol.
On the North Side of the Missouri Capitol sits the Missouri Veterans Memorial. Under a shower of autumn leaves, a new obelisk was added; a concrete column covered in smooth black granite memorializing Missouri soldiers’ part in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
This addition was decades in the making. The Veterans Memorial was first unveiled in 1991. Veteran and State Rep. Dave Griffith pushed for the addition of the new obelisk and was met with enthusiasm from his colleagues in the Capitol. The new obelisk cost $157,000 and took about 6 months to complete.
