COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - When one Colorado Springs eighth grade student heard about the government shutdown and that causing financial uncertainty for military families, he asked his principal how he could help.

“I just wanted to help the military families struggling through this difficult time of the shutdown,” Jaxson said. “My dad is a veteran, so every time we celebrate Veterans Day, we always just celebrate it by just doing something fun.”

When approaching his principal, Candice Johnson, he initially suggested a food drive. Because the school already does a canned food drive each fall, they got creative and came up with “Hat Day” to coincide with Veterans Day. Since hats are not typically allowed in school, students
