Corpus Christi ISD has approved its first set of new library books under Texas’ new school library laws.
It’s no small task to assess 1,280 books to potentially update the collections that serve more than 33,000 students from pre-K to high school. But on the recommendations of a group of parents, the Corpus Christi Independent School District Board of Trustees on Nov. 10 unanimously approved a sprawling list of nonfiction and fiction titles that school librarians will be able to choose from.
Previously, school librarians would fill school libraries with titles based on their own professional expertise. But now school districts are relying on parent volunteers to vet every book added to the school library catalog.
