HOMEWOOD, Ala. —

Samford is set to move in a new direction.

Martin Newton, Samford's vice president for intercollegiate athletics, spoke Tuesday for the first time since the university announced head football coach Chris Hatcher had been relieved of his duties on Sunday .

Newton detailed what went into the decision to part ways with Hatcher, the program's all-time winningest head coach.

"Last year we were 4-7, and the product on the field, we weren't competitive, and then this year was kind of the same thing. We just weren't competitive.
