State leaders are opening up the checkbook again, setting aside $20 million each week to keep nutrition assistance flowing after a second special session on Monday. But questions remain about how long the funding can last and where the money is coming from.

Lawmakers passed enough money to help SNAP recipients until Jan. 19, or at least until the government shutdown ends. The House approved the measure 52-9, and the Senate followed with a 30-6 vote, ensuring New Mexico SNAP recipients’ EBT cards won’t run dry.

"New Mexico has put money when we need it. We can get to it. And we figure out how to help the people in New Mexico," said Sen. George Muñoz, D-District 4.
