PORTLAND, Ore. — An investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot near Delta Park in North Portland.

On Nov. 2, Portland police officers were called to the 9900 block of North Whitaker Road at 9:55 p.m., where they found the man, identified as 49-year-old Robert Lee Mathis Jr., injured. Police said that despite first aid attempts by officers, Mathis died at the scene.

The medical examiner determined that Mathis's cause of death was homicide by gunshot wound; his family has been notified and is requesting privacy at this time.

North Whitaker Road was closed between North Victory Boulevard and North Hayden Meadows Drive for the investigation.
