A new book is offering more insight into the process of convicting one of the most gruesome serial killers and rapists in California's recorded history.
Joseph DeAngelo was called by many names in his decades-long crime spree: the Golden State Killer, Visalia Ransacker, Original Night Stalker, and, most notoriously in the Sacramento area, the East Area Rapist. The terror from his assaults and attacks led many across the state to consider him a boogeyman before his eventual capture.
DeAngelo pleaded guilty in 2020 to 13 murders and 13 rape-related charges for crimes from the 1970s and 1980s. He took a plea deal to avoid the death penalty, but he will die in prison because of his life sentence.
