Residents across Minnesota were treated to a stunning northern lights show as darkness fell on Tuesday evening.

Spectacular lights could be seen over the whole state, with a rare glimpse of the aurora borealis even seen in the light-filled Twin Cities metro.

It follows a series of solar flares that blew from the surface of the sun over the past few days, creating a rare "cannibal CME," where coronal mass ejections (CME) form one large, fast-moving CME.
