House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries says Democrats on the House Rules Committee will offer an amendment that calls for a three-year extension of enhanced tax credits that make health insurance coverage more affordable for millions.
Their proposal has no chance of passage in the Republican-led House, but it does give them another chance to make the case that Democrats are trying to protect people from massive premium hikes next year.
"How can you not extend these tax benefits for people who are in such desperate need," said Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Rules Committee.
"The beautiful thing about politics is you don't lose, you never lose until you give up trying. And we're not going to give up, and we're gonna fight like hell until this gets done."
Jeffries said it is his “strong expectation” that they will oppose the bill, which is expected to come before the House on Wednesday.
