A Nebraska woman born without a brain has celebrated her 20th birthday, defying every medical expectation.

Alex Simpson, from Omaha, was born with an extremely rare condition called hydranencephaly, which is a severe condition where the brain’s cerebral hemispheres are absent and replaced with sacs filled with cerebrospinal fluid.

Alex’s parents, Shawn and Lorena Simpson, told KETV News that their daughter was born with an extremely rare condition and they were excited to mark this significant milestone.

“(Hydranencephaly) means that her brain is not there,” Shawn said.

“Technically, she has about half the size of my pinky finger of her cerebellum in the back part of her brain, but that’s all that’s there.”
