A strong solar storm headed toward Earth is lighting up the skies across the northern half of the country.

According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, a coronal mass ejection is resulting in a strong geomagnetic storm, meaning auroras are visible over skies in some parts of the country, maybe as far south as Alabama to northern California.

A Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch was issued Tuesday, which is very rare. This is the fourth of such a watch so far this solar cycle.
