HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Portions of Maui County and Hawaii Island have been placed under a wind advisory for strong northeast trade winds that could cause damage.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu said the advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday for the island of Kahoolawe, most of Lanai, the Central Valley and South Haleakala areas of Maui, and the Kohala and Kau districts and the Humuula Saddle area of Hawaii Island.
Sustained northeast winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour will be possible, with gusts over 55 miles per hour.
Winds this strong will be able to tear off roof shingles, knock down tree branches, blow away tents and awnings and make it difficult to steer motor vehicles.
If you’re in the advisory area, be prepared for possible power outages caused by the wind. Als
