A GoFundMe has been launched for an Uber passenger seriously injured in a New Jersey crash that killed her driver after authorities said police tried stopping a vehicle driven by two intoxicated men.
The crash happened around 5:36 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, after West Deptford police responded to PNS Gas and Food Mart for a report of a vehicle “being operated by two intoxicated men,” Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew Johns said.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver, Steve Hall, who is from the United Kingdom, crossed into the opposite lane and slammed into another car, Johns said.
The Uber driver, identified by citizens familiar with the crash, was pronounced dead.
Gianna suffered both a broken femur and tibia, requiring surgery and “facing months of recovery ahead,” according to a GoFundMe campaign launched by Julie Hacker.
As of Tuesday, Nov. 11, the fundraiser had raised more than $2,800 to help with medical expenses, bills, and daily living costs, according to the campaign.
Hall was charged with death by auto and two counts of assault by auto, Johns said. He and his passenger also suffered injuries in the crash.
Under state law, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident, as it occurred during a police encounter.
