LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - As the weather gets colder, some pets are seeking warmth in risky places.

Cats and kittens, in particular, often curl up under the hood of a parked car for a little extra heat — but that cozy spot can quickly turn dangerous once the engine starts.

“Just give your hood a nice little thump on the way over to it and maybe if something’s under it, it’ll scurry off,” Owner of Southern Longview Auto, Matt Ryan said.

That simple action just might save a pet’s life.

Ryan says the long-lasting heat from a car’s engine will attract small animals like kittens and cats.

“When you park your car at night and your radiator is a nice 180 degrees and it’s 20 degrees outside,” Ryan said, “That’s a nice warm place for an animal to spend the night and it’ll be warm for hours.”
