PORTAGE, Wis. (WMTV) -Communities across southern Wisconsin held Veterans Day ceremonies Monday to honor the more than 330,000 veterans living in the state.

Celebrations took place from the state Capitol rotunda in Madison to the Portage High School gymnasium, where generations gathered to express gratitude for local veterans.

“It’s something that you can’t teach them in the classroom,” said Ed Carlson, Portage athletic director, whose students helped host a Veterans Day ceremony for local veterans.

“To be able to bring in our veterans from our community on this day and be able to honor them — we wish we could honor them on more than one day but especially today,” Carlson said. “Without veterans you would not have this opportunity, bottom line.”
