BOSTON —

More than 20,000 veterans in Massachusetts are struggling to make ends meet on Veterans Day due to the government shutdown, which put Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits on hold.

Despite the possibility of the government reopening, some military-focused nonprofits warn that it could take time for benefits and services to return to normal.

At the State House, lawmakers and U.S. veterans gathered to honor and celebrate the men and women who have served the country.

"Our veterans mean so much to our history; they mean so much to us today," Gov. Maura Healey said.
