YELM, Wash. — Initial results show Yelm Community Schools’ Proposition No. 1 — a replacement educational programs and operations levy — trailing, with 49.04% voting yes and 50.96% voting no.

Superintendent Chris Woods said he does not expect the measure to gain enough votes to pass and is meeting with state officials to discuss potential reductions. He said possible cuts could affect staffing and extracurricular programs, including sports and music.

“Everything’s going to be on the table,” Woods said. “It’s certainly disappointing for our students. We’ve got to be creative to still give our students the opportunities they deserve.”

The district has already made significant reductions following previous levy rejections. More than 100 staff members, including teachers, paraprofessionals
