WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva announced Monday she's heading to the nation's capital to be sworn into office, more than a month after she was elected to finish out her late father's term in Congress.

The decision by House Speaker Mike Johnson to delay swearing in Grijalva, who won a special election held on Sept. 23, has become a contentious issue between Republicans and Democrats. Johnson blamed the delay on the ongoing government shutdown.

In a statement, Grijalva said she's been informed that Speaker Johnson finally intends to swear her in to represent Arizona's 7th Congressional District, which encompasses a large section of southern Arizona and parts of Maricopa
