Northern lights are typically caused by solar storms that create coronal mass ejections, sending highly energized particles exploding from the sun's surface to Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field. In this case, the energized particles came from a strong solar wind that streamed from a large coronal hole on the sun, an area where the sun’s magnetic field is open.

There's another chance to see the northern lights Wednesday night , though skies could be overcast.
