The northern lights made an appearance around Puget Sound on Tuesday evening, as a geomagnetic storm swirled across the Northern Hemisphere and dipped south of the Canadian border.

Shades of sea green, violet and magenta streaked across the sky above Lake Washington at nightfall, according to a photo posted on social media by the National Weather Service in Seattle.

Clouds were expected to roll in over the coming hours and linger for days. But with sunset in the Seattle area at 4:37 p.m. Tuesday, we got clear dark skies at just the right moment. People around Western Washington reported catching a glimpse of the aurora.

“High clouds will continue to increase tonight, but any breaks in the clouds will allow for the northern lights to be visible,” according to the National Weather Service
