NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) -The Northern Lights are being seen tonight all across Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky.
The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are a natural spectacular light display that happens when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth’s upper atmosphere.
They are usually seen near the north pole, but when solar activity increases, they are seen further south.
Tonight is a good example as a severe (G4) geomagnetic storm is underway following the early arrival of two CMEs (Cornal Mass Ejections).
These Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun’s corona.
