SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Helping children in need, that’s the mission behind Springfield’s Care to Learn. The nonprofit works with the school district to support families struggling to fill in the financial gaps.
The Springfield-based nonprofit typically gets about 15 requests for assistance a day. Since the shutdown, that number has skyrocketed to more than 150 requests daily. Springfield Schools administrators say the program has become a lifeline in uncertain times.
“There are a lot of families who are asking, what resources are there and what do I need to do to access those resources,” said Springfield Public Schools Director of Health Services Lee Ann Neill.
She says they’re seeing an increase in families in need due to the ongoing government shutdown.
