BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - There were reports of the northern lights being visible in parts of south Louisiana Tuesday night, November 11.

WAFB viewers sent in many pictures of auroras painting the night sky with beautiful colors.

Viewers said they saw the lights in parts of French Settlement, Kentwood, Walker, Denham Springs, Albany, and other areas. There were also reports of the northern lights in the Hammond area, the Acadiana area, and the Lake Charles area.

Experts said the lights are visible because of an uptick in strong solar activity. The sun produced an X5.1 flare early Tuesday morning, one of the strongest of the solar cycle.
