The misnomer that the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport runway is being widened to accommodate larger private jets needs to be stopped. It’s a bad-faith attempt to take a byproduct of the actual reason for the widening and market it as the only reason. The runway needs to be widened for code and safety reasons, end of story.

It’s no different from how old buildings need to be updated to modern building code when they are renovated or new construction is added to them. Just because asbestos insulation used to be up to code doesn’t mean you can keep it in the walls of a building during renovation or new construction.

The runway is no different. State law required the removal of asbestos and the use of a safer alternative for renovations, the same way the Federal Aviation Administration
