A renewable energy precinct planned for outback Queensland will not go ahead after the energy company behind the project walked away from the initiative.

The Barcaldine Renewable Energy Zone (BREZ) was set to use wind, solar and green hydrogen to create an industrial precinct in Barcaldine , 100 kilometres east of Longreach.

Sunshot Industries, a subsidiary of renewable energy developer ZEN Energy, was to spearhead the development with the backing of a $7 million investment announced by the former Palaszczuk government in 2023.

ZEN Energy has now withdrawn from the project and told the ABC the decision came after discussions with the state government.
