The mayor of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council says he has been disqualified from driving after he was caught speeding and drink driving in his mayoral vehicle.

Mayor Dominic Bonanno said in a statement that the incident occurred on the evening of October 31 along McGeorge Road, Gisborne South, north-west of Melbourne.

He said he was driving his mayoral vehicle at the time and was caught speeding with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.

The mayoral vehicle was not impounded or damaged during the incident, the mayor said.

Cr Bonanno said the incident had breached community trust and he would be working to earn it back.
