DOVER, Minn.- The Dover Fire Department says after 5 days of fighting a grain bin fire on County Road 142 , it was finally able to extinguish it on Monday, Nov. 10 with the help of the Eyota Fire Department and Shea Construction.
The grain bin itself and the equipment used inside for drying corn was damaged beyond repair by the fire and the hole the department said it needed to cut inside to finally extinguish the blaze for good.
Jeremy Magnuson, the Dover Fire Chief, says part of the reason it took so long is that the fire started at the bottom of the bin.
Part of the problem when trying to put it out is the need to excavate and salvage the corn on top, which can lead to the fire spreading even further within the bin.
