High Court’s Order Leaves One in Eight Americans Receiving Reduced Food Assistance Until at Least Thursday

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday extended an order preventing the federal government from issuing full Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments, leaving millions of Americans uncertain about their food aid as the government shutdown stretches on.

The temporary order, set to expire just before midnight Thursday, allows the government to continue distributing only partial SNAP benefits while lawmakers negotiate a plan to reopen federal operations. Nearly 42 million people, or roughly one in eight Americans, rely on the program for groceries each month.
