Approximately 350 jobs across the North East are under threat following an announcement by the Japanese owners of an automotive supplier regarding plans to cease production at two facilities in the region. Tokyo-based NSK has confirmed it has begun consultation proceedings to close its NSK Bearing and AKS Precision Ball operations in Peterlee as part of "structural reforms".

The company manufactures bearings for major clients including Volkswagen and Renault, with the bulk of its products—used in petrol, diesel and electric vehicles—exported to Europe. However, NSK has cited "persistent challenges in the profitability of locally manufactured products", leading to the proposed closure of the County Durham facility.
