In 1865, the young artist Winslow Homer painted “A Veteran in a New Field.” After working as a sketch artist for Harper’s Weekly Magazine during parts of the Civil War, he eventually moved to Maine and began painting with oils. He is most famous for his canvases involving man’s struggle with the sea.
