The Northern Lights lit up UK skies last night in a 'strong' geomagnetic storm. Also known as the aurora borealis, the spectacular lights were spotted by lucky skywatchers across Scotland and northern England, where skies were clear.

There were even reports of aurora sightings by night owls across Greater Manchester , when the colourful displays pierced through the cloud in the early hours of Wednesday morning (November 12).

But for those who may have missed the rare display, the Met Office says the Northern Lights could be visible again tonight , with a rare 'severe' geomagnetic storm forecast.

The Northern Lights are caused by large explosions of activity from the sun which throw out huge amounts of charged particles into space.
