EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - City of East Lansing officials are warning residents and business owners about a new scam involving fraudulent invoices that appear to come from City departments.
Recently, an East Lansing homeowner with an active application before the City received a fake invoice demanding payment via wire transfer.
Officials stress that the City of East Lansing does not accept wire transfers for any payments.
The scam email used publicly available information to appear legitimate, but it was a fraudulent attempt to steal money.
City officials are urging community members to verify any invoice or payment request before sending money.
