PORTLAND, Oregon — On Veterans Day, as the government shutdown entered its 42nd day, Transportation Security Administration agents across the country continued reporting to work without paychecks — including the roughly 20% who are military veterans.

The crisis has forced transportation officials to require dozens of airports, including Portland International Airport (PDX), to cut flights by 6% to compensate for lean staffing levels. Looking ahead, the Federal Aviation Administration is calling for up to 10% in flight reductions by Friday, with at least 16 flights already canceled out of PDX for Wednesday.

"The morale is the lowest I've ever seen it in my 23 years," said Rebecca Wolf, president of American Federation of Government Employees TSA Local 1127.
