KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Solar storms brought the colors of the northern lights into East Tennessee Tuesday night, and plenty of WVLT viewers captured the phenomenon on camera.
Previous Coverage: Northern lights may be visible in parts of the US due to solar storms
The sun is currently at the peak phase of its 11-year activity cycle. Right now, its magnetic poles are shifting — north to south and vice versa — which means more solar activity, and more northern lights displays.
Last year, the Earth was hit by the strongest geomagnetic storm in two decades, prompting light displays all over the Northern Hemisphere.
