It was a rough outing at the box office for Sydney Sweeney's latest film, Christy, and now the actress is receiving some harsh criticism for her role. The movie, which tells the harrowing story of real-life boxer Christy Martin, has received a 97% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes (and a 65% from critics), but a wildly lackluster reported $1.3 million in the first weekend. With the movie playing on 2,000 screens nationwide, it's a huge disappointment.
This is the third straight struggle at the box office for projects with the Euphoria actress, following Americana ($500,000 made on a $9 million budget) and Eden ($2.5 million on a $55 million budget).
In an Instagram post following the slow opening, Sweeney stood by Christy and her part in it. “So yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life," Sweeney said.
That sentiment has ruffled some feathers, including those of Orange is the New Black actress Ruby Rose. In a Threads post on November 10, Rose didn't hold back as she called Sweeney a "cretin" and blamed the actress for the lack of success.
"For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us," Rose stated. "You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better."
Rose seemingly alluded to some recent controversial PR around Sydney Sweeney and her playing the part of someone in the LGBTQ+ community. The Immaculate actress was a topic of discussion after her American Eagle jeans ad that made a play on "good genes/good jeans." The ad was considered tone-deaf at best and a dog-whistle for eugenics at worst, and Sweeney garnered even more criticism in the lead up to Christy's release as she didn't address the controversy in November 4 interview with GQ.
Sweeney called the response to the ad -- and the fact that President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance weighed in -- "surreal."
